5 Tips for a Healthier Home

When at home, most people spend about 90% of their time indoors. When spending so much time inside your house, your house’s health can have a huge impact on your health! If you suddenly become ill, it may be because your house is sick.

It is very important to make sure that your home is healthy in order for you to be healthy! Here are five tips that can help insure both your health and that of your home.

1. Water

When it comes to drinking water it is important to know the quality of your drinking water! It’s best to use whole house water filters, buy less bottled water and if you have a private drinking well, make sure you test it periodically.

No one wants to hear that they have a leak. Make sure to check your toilet for leaks as well as your sinks. Leaks can cause mold growth that can then pollute the air you breathe! Avoid mold growth by fixing any leaks in your home that you may have and also make sure that the humidity levels in your home stay low throughout the year.

2. Air Quality

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA), an estimated 57 million Americans suffer from severe allergies and asthma! If you’re one of these 57 million Americans, then one way to reduce allergens is by keeping your home as clean as possible, which can dramatically improve the air you breathe!

The air in your home can be unhealthy if it contains too many pollutants. Invisible and odorless gases such as radon and carbon monoxide can be harmful and, in some instances, even fatal. It is important to test for harmful gases as well as to purify the air.

Allergens and dust mites can also make it more difficult to breathe, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere in your home. By installing electric radiant floor heating as well as radiant heating panels you can reduce up to 80% of dust mites in your home!

3. Household Products

Believe it or not, the indoor air in the typical American home contains over 500 chemicals!

Some cleaning products contain strong and potentially toxic ingredients as well as carcinogens. Many of the toxins found in these are bio accumulative, meaning the chemicals do not purge easily from the body. So over time, even mild exposures can add up to toxic levels! Consider switching to less toxic cleansers that are free of ammonia and other strong chemicals. You can buy toxin free cleaning supplies or you can even concoct your own homemade cleaning solutions!

4. Artificial Fragrances

When possible, try to avoid “fragrance” in products. Fragrances can contain hundreds of chemicals including phthalates, which can disrupt hormones! But watch out, even “unscented” products may contain a fragrance to mask the scent. Because of their simple ingredients, you can use essential oils distilled from plants as an alternative. Yet, if you can, it is best to entirely avoid using anything with fragrance.

5. Comfort

Who doesn’t want a home full of comfort and warmth? When you are comfortable in your home, you are less likely to take risky actions that can be harmful to your health. For example, if a house is too cold it may cause people to use stoves and ovens for heating, which can lead to chronic and possible acute exposure to carbon monoxide. Make sure that you are comfortable in your home by surrounding yourself with healthy heat. Products such as, electric radiant floor heating, heating panels, as well as our towel warmers and mirror defoggers are designed to bring you optimal comfort in order to keep your home happy and healthy.
