Designing A Comfortable, Functional Home Library

Designing a comfortable, functional home library

If you are lucky enough to have the space in your house to construct a home library, you might be overwhelmed with the design possibilities. While there is no such thing as having too many books in a library, organization is the key to creating an interior design that is warm, welcoming and won't become dated in a short amount of time.

Many people choose to hire an interior designer to help make their decorating dreams come true, but it's possible to create a vision for this room on your own. In the end, you might be happier knowing that your own personal touches were incorporated to truly make your library a sanctuary in your home.

Creating comfort

It's best that you take the time to make sure your library as comfortable as possible before putting it to use. This means bringing in cozy armchairs and a sofa (if you have the room) to give you a place to relax and unwind while reading.

In addition to bringing in practical, comfortable furniture, think about the warmth and light in the space. Radiant floor heating can be a luxury in any room of the home, including the library. Radiant heat can help maintain the temperature in the space and keep it cozy.

Make sure you have enough room for a table and standing lighting fixtures as well - a library is impractical if it's too dark to see clearly. If you're interested in going green, invest in sheer curtains to allow natural light to flow into the space. This might also make the space feel more warm and welcoming.

Using unique shelves

A library doesn't have to be dull. To take things to another level, think about bringing in uniquely-shaped bookshelves to store all of your favorite novels. Stay away from the idea that bookcases have to be wooden - colored shelves can do wonders for a bland space.

Bringing in prints and patterns

House Beautiful reports that one easy way to increase the appeal of any room is to incorporate prints and patterns - even in your library. Whether you go with leopard print upholstery on your chairs or toss a checkered throw on your sofa, these accents can go a long way when it comes to the interior design of any space.
