When it comes to creating an eco-friendly home, the most logical place to start is the bathroom. With the bathroom being such a highly trafficked area, you may not be surprised to discover the sheer amount of water and paper being wasted as well as lurking toxins. So how do you go about creating an eco-friendly bathroom that’s safe for you and your family? Try some of the following tips!
Water conservation: Did you know that just by turning off your faucet while brushing your teeth you can save up to 240 gallons of water a month? When going green, conserving water is one of the easiest steps to take. Just shorten the amount of time you take a shower, fix toilet or faucet leaks, and replace your toilet and showerhead. And by installing a low-flow showerhead, you can reduce water consumption by up to 50 percent!
Green Products:You may want to look twice at your shower curtain. If you have a plastic shower curtain, it may be harming you and the environment. Most of these curtains are made of PVC/ polyvinyl chloride and through Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) can pollute your air. These hazardous compounds emit toxic elements posing a variety of health risks. Some green alternatives for shower curtains are ones that are made of organic cotton or linen.
And let’s not forget toilet paper! Invest in recycled toilet paper! It's better for the environment, and you won’t even know the difference.
Improve the air quality: The bathroom is probably the most humid room in your house. And with excess humidity, you can develop mold, which can spur allergies, asthma, and other breathing troubles. In order to reduce the amount of humidity, you will need to keep your bathroom well ventilated. It’s as easy as just opening some windows, plugging in a fan, or you can install exhaust vents.
Another solution against airborne allergens is WarmlyYours Radiant Panels. Our LAVA® Radiant Panels are proven to reduce your heating expenses by an average of 12% annually, and reduce the amount of allergens and dust mites in your home! Not only will it help improve your air quality, but it will also be a comforting and luxuriously warm addition to your bathroom.
Switch to ceramic: Ceramic tiles have been a popular material for flooring for thousands of years and with good reason! With a variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, the possibilities are endless. Ceramic tiles are not easily damaged by moisture and are extremely scratch resistant, and you can warm the tiles up with electric floor heating. Some ceramic tiling is made by a low impact manufacturing process using natural materials and consequently does not retain odors, bacteria, or allergens.
Dispose of toxic cleaners: If you are not using a green cleaning product, your bathroom could be full of harmful chemicals. When using toxic cleaners, you could be leaving behind hazardous residue that can be dangerous to your health. Commercial cleaning products are not only harmful to you but also to the environment. So when it’s time to do a routine bathroom cleaning, it’s not a bad idea to pick up some natural cleaning products. You can also use home products such as baking soda or vinegar!
While it’s not always easy to be green, your improved health and the improved environment all around you are worthy rewards for your efforts!
