Studies Show the Impact of Radiant Floor Heating on Hardwood

Launstein, a hardwood flooring company based in Michigan, performed extensive testing on hardwood flooring of two different thicknesses, both of which were installed over a hot-water radiant heating system. Both were under an inch, however, one floor measured 3/8” thick while the other measured slightly thicker at ¾ inches. Launstein concluded that, “Both floors were tested at a surface temperature of 80-85 degrees with no visible problems. We do not recommend going any higher than 85 degrees on your floor surface.” The study also revealed that generally, room humidity levels impact wood floors. Launstein recommends, “a humidity level of at least 40% in the colder months when the floors are constantly kept at 85 degrees.”

Kahrs, another wood manufacturer, tested the WarmlyYours Environ II™ electric radiant floor heating system. This floor heating system is designed specifically for carpet, laminate, and floating wood floors. The testing took place over a 3 year period, and the results indicated that there was no noticeable effect on the laminate wood flooring.
