"My son is a quadriplegic," explained Russell Long of Aloha Home Builders, Eugene, Ore., about his award-winning remodeling project. "I've been thinking about universal design pretty much since he was born 15 years ago." Long's project and 150 others were named as regional winners in the 2012 Regional CotY Awards, sponsored by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry. Long's home, which won in the Northwest region for whole-house remodels costing $500,000 to $1 million, transformed his family's 2,400-square-foot home into one of 6,300 square feet, including a 1,000-square-foot apartment for guests or live-in care providers.
