A farmhouse design featured by HGTV was classic in style, but didn't sacrifice the modern conveniences that were important to the homeowners.
In the kitchen, the traffic patterns were open and a comfortable cooking area was established. With white, cottage-style cabinetry and a selection of collectibles for accent, the homeowners were able to combine contemporary needs with traditional decor.
For homeowners who want to bring the warm atmosphere of old-time farmhouse decor to their homes, soft wall colors and vintage furniture are an ideal combination for this popular style of home design.
One modern addition that would be right at home with farmhouse style is radiant heat, which keeps room temperature evenly distributed without the use of a duct system. Warm floors that befit the comfortable atmosphere of a homey farmhouse are easy to achieve with infloor heating.
An Eclectic Mix
Better Homes and Gardens magazine recommended home decorators start with soft, dusty tones and an eclectic mix of furnishings that work best in cottage and farmhouse decor. While farmhouses are generally bigger, they often have similar furniture to those in country-like cottages. For instance, fancy chairs with decorative curves are a good contrast to the more austere lines of a farm table.
Window coverings for a farmhouse look can range widely. Soft curtains such as sheers or lace are a traditional choice, but adding shades will provide more privacy. Woven shades come in a variety of wood tones that lend a natural look to their surroundings. In the HGTV feature, cornices above the kitchen windows were decorated with the homeowners' collection of old school globes and maps.
Function with Style
The accessories used in farmhouse decorating should be in keeping with the functional atmosphere of an older home. Bowls and platters placed on open shelves above kitchen countertops are in a spot where they can be displayed as well as used on a daily basis.
Instead of a kitchen island, a pine farm table may be placed in the center of the room with a matching chest underneath to provide storage for utensils. If guests are expected for dinner, a table setting that includes crisp linens, painted chairs and antique silver candleholders for a centerpiece would be right at home in a farmhouse-style dining room.
Taking a page from cottage decor, farmhouse decorating also incorporates a natural theme well by including indoor plants and storage baskets made of willow or wicker.
