Integrating Modern Comfort into a Victorian Masterpiece

The Problem

The original Victorian architecture of this San Francisco home concealed an interior that design innovators aimed to reinvent with a bold, modern aesthetic. The master bathroom was a focal point of this remodel, featuring expansive tile surfaces, custom marble vanities, a walk-in shower, and a soaking tub. However, high-end tile inherently retains the damp, chilly microclimate of Northern California, making winter and coastal mornings shockingly cold underfoot.

The Solution

To bridge the gap between high design and physical comfort, the design team seamlessly integrated a hidden floor warming solution. They chose the TempZone™ Flex Roll system, laying it beneath the tile flooring across the main bathroom and directly inside the walk-in shower. To complete the spa-like experience, two hardwired, polished stainless steel Sierra towel warmers were added to the walls, adding a touch of classic luxury while ensuring warm, dry towels were always on hand.

The Outcome

The outcome is a striking, high-performance retreat where modern luxury meets efficient operation. Controlled by an intelligent SmartStat programmable thermostat, the in-floor heating delivers consistent, radiant comfort right where it is needed most. The system provides the homeowners with absolute peace of mind, proving that historic homes can achieve cutting-edge comfort without compromising architectural integrity.

Featured Products

  • TempZone™ Flex Rolls: Selected as the primary electric floor heating solution to blanket the 84 sq. ft. bathroom and shower floor. It eliminated the jarring shock of cold tile by delivering even, ambient radiant heat exactly where feet make contact.
  • Sierra Towel Warmer (Polished Stainless Steel): Two hardwired units were installed to solve the problem of damp, chilly towels. They add a sophisticated aesthetic element while ensuring a warm, dry towel is always waiting post-shower.
  • SmartStat™ Programmable Thermostat: Installed to optimize energy efficiency. By utilizing its floor sensor, it ensures the floor warming system only draws power when needed, keeping operating costs low.

* This system operates at approximately $0.37 per hour. At roughly $45.00 per month (running 4 hours a day), it costs less than a single daily boutique coffee while providing an unmatched level of safety, comfort, and everyday luxury.

Frequently Asked Questions

Showing all 4 questions

Answer: No, it is highly cost-effective. Running this 84 sq. ft. system costs only about $0.37 per hour. Explain: This efficiency is due to radiant heat directly warming objects and people rather than wasting energy heating the air, combined with a programmable thermostat that limits usage to peak times. Example: In this San Francisco master bath, running the system for 4 hours a day adds less than $45 a month to the utility bill.
Answer: Yes, electric radiant systems are perfectly compatible with tile, marble, and stone surfaces. Explain: Tile and stone have high thermal conductivity, meaning they transfer heat quickly and retain it efficiently, making them the ideal surface pairing for electric mesh systems. Example: The TempZone™ Flex Roll in this project safely and evenly warms the premium tile flooring and walk-in shower area.
Answer: Energy waste is prevented by using a dedicated programmable thermostat equipped with an in-floor sensor. Explain: The thermostat monitors the actual core temperature of the floor rather than the ambient air, automatically powering down the system once the target comfort level is met. Example: This project utilizes the SmartStat Programmable Thermostat to ensure the floor warming system only activates during the morning and evening routines.
Answer: Yes, high-quality radiant heating cables are fully insulated and safely rated for wet locations. Explain: The heating elements are completely embedded within the thinset or mortar beneath the tile, protecting them from moisture while meeting strict National Electrical Code (NEC) standards for shower installations. Example: This San Francisco remodel safely extended the TempZone™ system straight into the walk-in shower floor for an uninterrupted path of warmth.
