Heated Paver Driveway Project: The O'Malley Residence

The O'Malley Residence in Ottawa, ON, features an 810 sq. ft. heated paver driveway. This project utilized a 44 KW electric snow melt system with automated controls to provide a safe, convenient, and clear surface throughout the winter, eliminating the need for manual snow removal.

This project outlines the design and materials for a heated paver driveway, using a Snow Melt Mat system to provide full coverage for a total area of 810 sq. ft. The system is designed to operate on 240V.

Design & Materials

The installation plan requires a mix of heating mats, controls, and accessories to create an automated and efficient system. The heating mats will be laid out directly on the prepared sub-base before the pavers are installed.

  • Heating Mats:
    • 9 units of WHMA-240-0240 Snow Melt PowerMats will be used. Each mat is 2x40 ft. (80 sq. ft.), totaling 720 sq. ft. of coverage. This accounts for the main heating area, leaving space for edging or irregular shapes.
  • Controls & Automation:
    • An SCA-DUAL Advanced Snow and Ice Melt Control will automatically manage the system's operation.
    • An AIR-SS-2 Aerial-Mounted Sensor will detect moisture and temperature, activating the system only when needed to optimize energy use.
  • Relay & Power Management:
  • Junction Boxes:
    • An SM-JBOX-IG-L and an SM-JBOX-IG-S will be installed in-ground to provide safe, waterproof connections for the electrical wiring.
  • Accessories:
    • A Snow Melt Plaque (SMP) is included as an NEC (National Electrical Code) requirement, indicating the presence of the heated system.

* The $5.75 per hour operating cost is an estimate derived from the system's total power consumption of 44,000 watts (44 kW). This figure is calculated by multiplying the power consumption by the estimated average cost of electricity per kilowatt-hour in the Ottawa area. The actual total cost will be lower than simply multiplying this rate by the number of hours in winter, as the smart control system only activates the heat when snow or ice is detected, ensuring efficient operation.
