We've Got Your Back: A Backup Floor Sensor
Every complete WarmlyYours floor heating system—TempZone™, Environ™, or Slab Heat—ships with two floor sensors: one with the heating mat or cable and one with the thermostat. Install the backup right beside the primary sensor and run both leads to the thermostat box, but connect only the primary; the backup stays disconnected until it is needed.
The floor sensor lives under your tile, wood, carpet, or concrete, where it tells the thermostat how warm the floor really is. If that sensor is ever nicked during installation or fails years down the road, replacing it would normally mean tearing up the finished floor.
With the backup already embedded in the floor, the fix takes minutes: turn off power at the breaker, disconnect the original sensor at the thermostat, connect the backup, and your heat is back on. No torn-up floor, no new flooring, no second installation. Follow your thermostat's instructions, or have a qualified electrician make the swap.
Installer tip: Install both sensors side by side, centered between the heating wires, and test each one for 8–15 kΩ before covering the floor. For Slab Heat, place the sensors in capped 3/4″ rigid metal conduit between cable runs, clear of the heating cable, as the Slab Heat installation manual describes.
How to Install Floor Heating in a Shower
TempZone Shower Mats install under tile in shower floors and benches. The key difference from standard floor heating is the waterproofing step—a waterproofing membrane must be applied over the entire assembly before tile is installed. Our shower mats are UL-listed for wet environments.
Step-by-Step Installation
- Step 1: Ensure the shower pan or substrate is properly sloped for drainage and structurally sound.
- Step 2: Apply a layer of modified thinset to the shower floor or bench surface.
- Step 3: Press the TempZone Shower Mat into the thinset, following your SmartPlan layout.
- Step 4: Test the heating system with an ohmmeter—check resistance before, during, and after installation.
- Step 5: Apply a waterproofing membrane over the entire assembly, including the mat and all seams.
- Step 6: Install tile over the waterproofing membrane using modified thinset and the back-butter method.
- Step 7: Allow thinset to fully cure before turning on the heating system. Wire the thermostat and enjoy a warm shower floor.
Important Considerations
- Waterproofing is mandatory: A waterproofing membrane must cover the entire heated area, the mat, and all seams. This protects both the heating element and the structure beneath.
- UL-listed for wet locations: TempZone Shower Mats are specifically listed for use in moisture-rich environments including shower floors and benches.

Bathrooms designed with shower and floor heating will include only one thermostat by default. But it is possible to design with a thermostat for each zone if desired. Installing a separate thermostat for the shower area can help reduce cost and energy usage. This also allows you to heat the bathroom floor alone for everyday use and only heat the shower area when needed.
For shower kits, most of the modified thinsets you are looking for are listed as compliant with ANSI 118.4 and ANSI 118.11. Unmodified thinsets will be listed as compliant with ANSI 118.1. Modified thinset is an industry term for any thinset mortar which has additives (usually latex or acrylic).
TempZone™ is an electric floor heating system that operates like an electric blanket for your floors. TempZone™ is covered in thinset, and is installed over the top of your shower pan and beneath your flooring. The system provides a warm, even temperature across your floor. The TempZone™ floor heating system is easy to install, operate, and maintain.
The shower floor heating kits can be tied into floor heating for the rest of the bathroom - allowing for one thermostat to control both areas as long as both areas are using less than 15 amps. When designing installation plans, we design with only one thermostat by default. If you prefer two separate thermostats, it might be a good idea, since the shower floor application is usually thicker and takes longer to heat. Yes, with the right product. TempZone™ Shower Mats and TempZone™ Flex Rolls carry a wet-location listing for the U.S. and Canada, so they can be installed in a shower under tile or stone. TempZone™ Custom Mats are rated for dry locations only (bathrooms, but not shower areas), so they are not used inside a shower.
Every system must be on ground-fault protection. WarmlyYours thermostats include a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI); if another control is used, the heating element must be connected through a separate ground-fault device.
The Pro GEN II shower kits come with pre-formed pan. They have the same level of warranty as competing brands, but Pro GEN II shower kits have many improvements, and often total to a lower price than competitors.

When waterproofing a curbless shower, most guidelines require a continuous surface, created by a bonded waterproof membrane, on the floor and walls of the shower itself. The waterproofing should extend outside the shower enclosure for at least one foot beyond the highest point of the floor. Additional waterproofing outside the shower is suggested as a consideration, but is not required.

TempZone™ Custom Mats are different: they are rated for dry locations only. Their manual counts bathrooms as dry locations but excludes shower areas, so a Custom Mat must not be extended into a shower. Use a Shower Mat for the shower floor instead.
Yes, you can use a single thermostat to control both the bathroom floor and the shower heating, provided the total amperage does not exceed the thermostat’s limit (typically 15 amps). However, we recommend using separate thermostats if you prefer different temperature settings or schedules for each area.
Yes. Because replacing a sensor under a finished shower floor or bench is difficult, our shower heating kits include a built-in backup floor sensor. If the primary sensor ever fails, you can simply connect the backup sensor to your thermostat without having to remove any tile.
Keep the power lead factory splice and the cable end seal outside the shower area and at least 1 ft. away from shower openings or other spots normally exposed to water. The control must be located at least 4 ft. from shower openings, where it cannot be exposed to water or touched by someone in the shower.
