Heated Concrete Ramp in Eaton Rapids, MI

This project showcases a 240V electric snow melt system installed on a new concrete ramp in Eaton Rapids, MI. The system utilizes 70 sq. ft. of heating mats and an automatic control unit with a sensor to keep the walkway clear of snow and ice, ensuring safety and convenience.

This showcase project details the design and implementation of a custom electric snow melt system for a new concrete ramp in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. The primary goal was to create a permanently clear and safe walkway, eliminating the need for manual shoveling or chemical de-icers. The solution involved a 240V snow melt mat system engineered for full coverage of the 70 sq. ft. area.

The system's core components include two Snow Melt PowerMats (a 2'x20' and a 2'x15' mat) which were specifically chosen to fit the ramp's dimensions. These mats were carefully laid out and secured on the sub-base before the concrete was poured, ensuring they were properly embedded to provide uniform heat distribution.

For automated operation, the system is controlled by an Advanced Snow and Ice Melt Control unit. This is paired with an aerial-mounted sensor that intelligently detects both temperature and precipitation. When conditions for snow or ice formation are met, the control unit automatically activates the system. A relay panel manages the electrical load for the mats, ensuring the system operates safely and efficiently. An NEC-required Snow Melt Plaque was also installed to alert others of the heated surface. The system's total electrical load is 3,500 W at 14 A, providing an effective and reliable solution for winter weather challenges.

* The operating cost of this snow melt system is calculated by multiplying its power consumption (3.5 kW) by the local electricity rate (approx. $0.19/kWh). This results in an estimated cost of $0.67 per hour when the system is actively running. Because it's an automated, sensor-based system, it only operates during snowfall, making it an energy-efficient solution.
