Heated Shower Floors

I used these for two shower seats. Turnes out they are easy to install prior to tile and work well.

Our master bathroom is always freezing!

We live in one of those homes that doesn't have a bathroom door in the master bedroom. So, when we decided to remodel, I was all about doing something to make the area warmer. (You wouldn't think this is something to worry about in SoCal, but it is!) We talked about building a door to keep the heat in, but that was going to be a big job and we weren't sure we would like another door, in a small space. I started investigating heat panels as a different option and found WarmlyYours online. Our contractor had never heard of the panel, but was game to install it. I bought the timer switch to go with and we had it hardwired in. Wow, what a difference it has made! Not too hot, just enough to take the cold edge off. The panel looks great on the wall; we are so happy to find this unique answer to our remodel problem. I would (and have) recommend these radiant heat panels to anyone.

A warm floor on a cold day is a real treat, and the whole room is cozy. It’s a small bathroom so the cost was a fraction of the whole project. I don’t notice any increase in my electric bill, but if I did it would be worth it to me since I’m not using the gas-fired (fossil fuel) boiler for that room. Speaking of which, removing the radiator gave me more floor space for a wider vanity. If your vanity is on legs, a tip I have for you is to extend the system about an inch or two under the vanity to keep your toes warm. This is my first heated floor, but when it comes time to replace any other floors of my home, I will definitely install this system. The company was so easy to work with, and Pauline has all the answers you want, including what you don’t know you need. This was also the first time my contractor installed this system, and he had no issues at all after watching the installation video and once he realized he had to set the control to heat “tile” flooring. Be aware that you’ll need to install a dedicated electrical line to the controller. The controller is programmable so that you can set the operational time and the temperature of the heating elements. It’s already cold in NY so I just keep mine on most of the day since I’m working from home. Another plus for me is that this is a woman-owned business. There’s no downside to working with WarmlyYours.

I used this pre-made shower pan and waterproofing kit for the first time and liked it.

I do about 10-15 mud set tile showers a year and generally build my pan from scratch with pan liner and mortar, then I use hardi backer brand concrete board on the walls, then I tape and mud all seams followed by 3 coats of Redguard. That process takes 3 days always because of cure times. I prepped a 4' x 3.5' shower with 9' walls in one long day the first time I used this system. I put the pan in, hung the concrete board, and put on all the waterproofing on the first day and started setting tile the following day. Obviously this is a big time saver and will go faster the next time I use this system. The one tricky part is hooking up the drain. My job was a second floor bathroom remodel with no access to the drain pipe from below, so I had to make the glue connection as I set the pan. That just made it a bit more challenging the first time out. Setting the pan and drain first and then making the drain connection later is definitely the easier way to go if possible.
