Wondering About the Meaning Behind Your Favorite Carols?

The tradition of singing Christmas carols has been around for generations. Somehow, nothing puts you in the spirit of the season faster than listening to—or singing along with—your favorite holiday standards. At WarmlyYours, we love the holiday season because it gives us so many reasons to celebrate. Plus, it just so happens that Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the New Year occur during the winter, when the weather is coldest and radiant heat feels the coziest.

As you go about humming your favorite holiday tunes while you finish your Christmas shopping and holiday baking, have you ever stopped to think about the meaning behind the lyrics?

Many of them are pretty straightforward, telling the story of the nativity or explaining the magic of Santa. However, if you listen closely, you’ll notice that holiday songs seem to cover the whole spectrum of human emotions and behavior. Make sure you have plenty of mistletoe, because a surprising number of them are about romance, from “Winter Wonderland” to “All I Want for Christmas is You”.

“Jingle Bells” starts off with romance, but quickly turns into a lesson on distracted driving:

'Tis the season for snow melting and roof deicing.

A day or two ago

I thought I'd take a ride

And soon Miss Fanny Bright

Was seated by my side

The horse was lean and lank

Misfortune seemed his lot

We got into a drifted bank

And then we got upsot.

(It’s a good thing they didn’t have texting in those days, or it could’ve been worse. )

“Santa, Baby” speaks to our more materialistic urges, while “The Little Drummer Boy” brings out the altruistic side of human nature.

“Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer” touches on issues of bullying and redemption. And “I Saw Mama Kissing Santa Claus” and “(I’m Getting) Nuttin’ for Christmas” and addresses varying degrees of childhood mischief, leading to the need for a naughty and nice list.

Adults can get into mischief as well, with the duet “Baby It’s Cold Outside,” Drinking, smoking, staying out late. Oh my, what will the neighbors think?

And, of course, we all get a little sentimental about the holidays when Dean Martin promises “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” and Bing Crosby starts to croon “White Christmas”.

While most of us love plenty of the white stuff for the holidays, we become a bit more ambivalent about it when we have to drive in or shovel it. At WarmlyYours, the snow doesn’t bother us; in fact, we absolutely love it—why else would we have locations in the Midwest and Canada? If you pay close attention to the lyrics of our favorite holiday song, you’ll understand why. You’ve probably been singing it for years without even realizing that it’s a song written entirely about radiant heat. It goes a little something like this…

Oh the weather outside is frightful

But the fire is so delightful

And since we've no place to go*

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

(But since most of us do have someplace to go, snow melting systems provide an easy and hassle-free way to clear your path, so you can be safely on your way).

Oh, it doesn't show signs of stopping

And I've brought some corn for popping

Since the lights are turned way down low*

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

(Turning down the lights can help you save on your energy costs. Installing radiant floor heating in the high-use areas of your home allows you to turn down the thermostat for the rest of the house, and save even more money!)

The fire is slowly dying*

And, my dear, we’re still good-by-ing

But as long as you love me so

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let it snow!

(Really, why mess with the fireplace, when a LAVA® Radiant Panel is much easier and more convenient to use?)

Wrap yourself in luxury with a fluffy bath towel heated on a towel warmer.

When we finally say goodnight

How I'll hate going out in the storm!

But if you'll really hold me tight

All the way home I'll be warm. *

(Or, when your sweetheart isn’t available, wrap yourself in a warm, fluffy towel, heated on one of our luxurious towel warmers)

Oh, it doesn't show signs of stopping

And I've brought some corn for popping*

Since the lights are turned way down low

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

(Sorry, popcorn not included)

When we finally kiss goodnight

How I'll hate going out in the storm, *

But if you'll really hold me tight,

All the way home I'll be warm.

(Better yet, when the weather is cold and miserable, don’t go out. Stay home and enjoy the luxurious warmth of radiant heat).

The fire is slowly dying

And, my dear, we’re still good-by-ing*

But as long as you love me so

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!
