These days almost everyone is striving to save energy from consumers to businesses. Saving energy not only saves you money but it’s also better for the planet.
A recent analysis of energy use reveals good news to companies and consumers alike. The study revealed that both companies and consumers are continuing to minimize energy consumption while also using more energy efficient products.
According to a survey from the Deloitte Center for Energy Solutions, 9 out of 10 companies have set goals regarding electricity usage and energy management practices. 66 percent of the companies surveyed identified cost cutting as their primary motivation. Over a three to four year time span, businesses are targeting average reductions in energy consumption of nearly 25 percent. The survey indicates that 85 percent of businesses perceive that reducing electricity costs are essential to staying financially competitive, and 81 percent view reducing electricity costs as essential to their image.
In addition, almost two-thirds of consumers revealed that the recession has made them more efficient. 83 percent of consumers say they’ve taken extra steps to reduce their electric bills over the past year, and 93 percent plan to use the same amount of electricity or less in the future. Also, about one-third of consumers shared that they will be replacing old appliances with newer, more energy efficient models for future energy conservation.
The reduced amount of energy consumption by consumers and businesses has also revealed that the energy used for heating and cooling has decreased as well. The results of a survey from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, a division of the Department of Energy, indicates that Americans in general are using less energy to heat and cool their homes.
Space heating and air conditioning have accounted for more than half of all U.S. residential energy consumption for decades. Yet, the Residential Energy Consumption Survey (RECS) has new estimates that show 48% of energy consumption in American homes during 2009 was used for heating and cooling, which is down from 58% in 1993.
Space heating accounted for 42% of household energy use in 2009, down from 53% in 1993. Stoves, washers/dryers and other appliances, electronics and lighting accounted for 30% of energy use, followed by water heaters at 18%, air conditioning at 6%, and refrigerators at 5%. The lower energy consumption is attributable in part to more efficient heating and cooling equipment, such as electric radiant floor heating and radiant panels, better insulation, and more efficient windows.
