Two common names, several different products
“Roof heat tape” and “roof heat cable” are often used for the same category of electric deicing products. The word tape does not mean adhesive tape, and the name alone does not establish where a product can be installed. The important distinctions are approved application, heating technology, electrical requirements, and installation method.
Self-regulating roof and gutter heat cable
ICE Shield Self-Regulating Heat Tape for Roofs & Gutters adjusts output as surrounding conditions change. Approved systems can be cut to length and terminated using the specified connection and end-seal accessories. Plan the circuit, controls, and attachments before ordering.
Self-regulating cable can serve roof layouts that are unsuitable for a plug-in kit, including approved metal-roof applications. Check the selected cable and roofing material together; a broad product-family description does not replace installation instructions.
Fixed-length plug-in roof kits
ICE Shield Plug-In Heat Tape Kit for Roofs & Gutters is a preassembled 120V system with 5 W/ft cable for compatible asphalt-shingle applications. Choose the length from the roof layout. Do not cut, splice, cross, or overlap a kit to make an incorrect length fit.
“Constant wattage” describes the heating technology: the cable has a fixed output while energized. The phrase still belongs in specifications and technical comparisons even though the product title leads with heat tape.
Choose by application first
- Confirm roof material, slope, gutter and downspout construction, and attachment requirements.
- Measure the entire drainage layout, including roof-edge patterns and downspouts.
- Check supply voltage, circuit capacity, ground-fault protection, and controls.
- Compare the current manual and warranty for the exact product.
Common questions
Can I use the same heat tape on a pipe?
Only when that exact product is approved for the application. PRO-Tect heat tape for pipes has pipe-specific attachment, thermostat, and insulation requirements.
Is self-regulating always a plug-in product?
No. Power-connection accessories depend on the system. A conversion kit must be explicitly approved for the cable and circuit.
Where should I start?
Use the heat tape selection guide to choose an application, then request a system layout rather than selecting solely by the words on a package.
