Plan the deicing cable around the roof’s drainage path and the solar installation. A roof-and-gutter system keeps a path open for meltwater at roof edges, gutters and downspouts; it is not a system for clearing snow from solar panels or controlling roof snow loads.
- Use the layout for the actual cable and roof. Follow the current WarmlyYours installation manual and project drawing. Cable routing and tracing height depend on roof material, eave overhang and drainage. Do not use a blanket 2–3-foot distance below the panels as an installation rule.
- Coordinate with the solar installer and roofer. Show them the proposed cable, attachment points, power connection and drainage route. Have them check panel/racking clearances, roof compatibility and access for maintenance before installation. The deicing manual does not authorize attaching cable to photovoltaic modules or modifying the solar system.
- Address sliding snow separately. Solar panels can shed accumulated snow. Have the solar/roof designer assess whether the installation needs an engineered snow-retention system. Leaving an arbitrary gap below an array does not establish that falling snow will be harmless to people, gutters or heating cable.
- Keep required roof access clear. Solar fire-access pathways and setbacks depend on the adopted code and roof/array configuration. They are not a universal 3-foot border around every panel array. The solar installer and local authority must confirm the requirements for the site.
- Have a qualified electrician plan the wiring. Follow the heating-cable and solar-equipment instructions and local electrical requirements for circuits, protection and routing. Turn off the heating circuit before installation or service. This article does not approve a shared raceway or prescribe separation based on an unverified interference claim.
Send WarmlyYours a roof plan showing the solar array, eaves, gutters, downspouts and proposed power connection so the deicing layout can be coordinated with the other equipment. Follow the manual for the specific cable system; self-regulating and constant-wattage cables have different installation restrictions.
