What is radiant heating? This is a question we hear frequently. Radiant heating works by warming people and objects in a space rather than just the air, creating an even and quiet comfort. This heating method is particularly well-suited for areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. LVT and LVP flooring are experiencing a surge in popularity, and for good reason. Luxury vinyl is both waterproof and durable, providing a realistic wood or stone appearance without the hefty price tag, making it an affordable luxury. It’s no surprise that luxury vinyl captured 40% of the resilient flooring market in 2023, and this trend continues to grow.

When working with electric floor heating and vinyl flooring, it is crucial to consult the vinyl manufacturer regarding their radiant heating compatibility. Be sure to ask several key questions: Is this flooring compatible with radiant heating? What is the maximum allowable temperature? What is the recommended installation method for this vinyl flooring? What is the R-value of the underlayment? Lastly, does electric floor heating affect the warranty? Adhering to all manufacturer guidelines for your vinyl floor is essential for ensuring optimal performance.

When selecting a heating system, we recommend our TempZone system, which includes options such as the TempZone flex rolls (cut and turn mat) or the TempZone cable with grip strips. It is advisable to avoid using Environn for vinyl installations. Make sure to identify the subfloor type—whether it is wood or concrete—and prime it if necessary. Early in the process, decide on the thermostat location and communicate this to us so we can incorporate it into our free SmartPlan. During installation, ensure that you place the supplied floor sensor correctly; each kit comes with two sensors for backup.

When installing the flooring, follow the installation method appropriate for your subfloor type. If you are working over a concrete slab, begin by laying down a ThermalSheet, which is our synthetic cork underlayment. After that, cover the heating system with self-leveling concrete, typically about half an inch thick, before placing your flooring on top. If you are installing over a wood subfloor, you can lay the heating system directly on the subfloor, but be sure to dam the perimeter and any in-floor air vents to prevent self-leveling material from spreading where it shouldn't.

One of the best practices for vinyl installation is to adhere to all acclimation requirements set by your flooring manufacturer. Ensure that you acclimate your flooring before starting the installation process. Additionally, it is important to test the heating system before pouring any cement. Make sure that the cables or mats are fully embedded in the self-leveling concrete and that you follow all moisture specifications for your specific type of self-leveling material. Never exceed the heat limits specified by the manufacturer, and maintain even cable spacing of 3 to 4 inches to ensure consistent heat distribution without cold spots.

For a TempZone cable project, the process is slightly different. This project was more economical, costing $1,291 for 149 square feet. While cable tends to be more labor-intensive, the costs often balance out. It is wise to evaluate both options to determine what will work best for your project.

The operating costs for this project are similar, estimated at about $1.08 per day, assuming eight hours of operation each day. The SmartPlan for this project also details how the cables will be run, where the grip strips will be placed, and the desired spacing for the cables. On the left, you can see the testing with an ohm meter, followed by the cable layout according to the SmartPlan, secured to the subfloor using packing tape or masking tape. Finally, the flooring is installed, resulting in a beautiful and cozy finish.
