Heat tape is electrical equipment. A suitable, certified product can provide pipe freeze protection when it is installed, operated, and maintained according to its instructions. Incorrect use, damaged cable, or incompatible insulation can create fire and shock hazards. No product should be described as risk-free.

Check the application before installation

Verify that the selected cable is approved for the pipe material, diameter, location, and expected temperature. Check whether it is intended for indoor, outdoor, or wet locations. Do not use roof deicing cable on a water pipe unless that exact cable is approved for both applications.

• Install the thermostat or sensor in its required position so it can sense the intended conditions.
• Provide the specified grounded supply and ground-fault protection.

Inspect rather than forget

Before the cold season, check for jacket damage, loose attachments, moisture intrusion, and damaged insulation. Test protection devices as directed. Disconnect damaged equipment and have a qualified professional assess it. A tripping protection device needs investigation; repeatedly resetting it is not a repair.

Can it stay plugged in?

Follow the operating instructions for the particular kit and thermostat. A built-in thermostat and self-regulating cable are different features; neither removes the need for inspections.

Can I thaw a frozen pipe with it?
