Choose ICE Shield Plug-In Heat Tape Kit when
- The roof is asphalt shingle with simple eaves, standard gutters and straight downspouts
- The homeowner wants the lowest upfront cost
- Power is an existing 120V outdoor GFCI outlet
- Every run fits a pre-assembled 20–240 ft kit without cutting or overlapping
Quote ICE Shield (Self-Regulating) when
- The roof is metal, standing seam or rubber/EPDM — constant wattage is prohibited there
- Valleys, dormers, multi-level gutters or narrow downspouts mean the cable has to overlap
- The job is commercial or large residential, on 208V, 240V or 277V circuits
- You need to cut cable to exact field lengths
- The client wants automatic sensor control that cuts power as it warms up
Cable Type by Roof Material
The roof material decides which cable you can install. Check it before you quote.
Metal, standing seam, steel and rubber/EPDM roofs require self-regulating cable (ICE Shield).
Constant wattage cable is prohibited on them. On conductive metal it creates localized heat traps and a fire risk, and the UL-listed installation method requires self-regulating cable — installed any other way, there is no listing and no warranty.

Mounting clips and attachment methods vary by surface, so tell us the roof type when you request your layout and we will specify the right hardware.
Yes. Roof and gutter de-icing cable must run on a dedicated GFCI-protected circuit sized for the total cable wattage, installed by a licensed electrician. Long roof edges and gutter runs often require more than one circuit, which is why we size circuits for you on every SmartPlan™ layout.
