Let's talk controls, because this is a better result for the client and a real add-on for you. Constant wattage is a simple story. It heats whenever it's energized. So the routine is to plug it in when winter weather is coming and unplug it in the spring. Easy.
Done. If the client wants it more hands-off, an outdoor-rated timer or smart plug on that circuit gives them scheduling. Self-regulating is where you can really do it right. We offer controls, including an ambient temperature sensor, so the system only energizes when conditions actually call for it instead of running on every cold, dry day. That's a genuine operating cost savings you can put in your proposal, and it's the difference between a cable and an actual system.
Walk your client through both. A lot of them will happily step up to the controlled system once they understand that they're not paying to heat a dry roof. Thanks for watching, everybody.
Porozmawiajmy o sterownikach, ponieważ to lepszy wynik dla klienta i prawdziwy dodatek dla Ciebie. Stała moc to prosta historia. Grzeje zawsze, gdy jest zasilany. Rutyna polega więc na podłączeniu go, gdy nadchodzi zimowa pogoda, i odłączeniu na wiosnę. Proste.
Gotowe. Samoregulacja to miejsce, gdzie można naprawdę zrobić to dobrze.

Our self-regulating cable product does require the use of a control and/or a sensor to operate. WarmlyYours offers a variety of controls ranging from a basic manual control to our premium option that provides the ultimate in convenience and hands-off operation.
Our constant wattage cable kits do not require a thermostat/controller and can be connected to an outlet throughout an entire winter, during a single snow event, or whenever deicing is needed. An optional plug-in thermostat can be used if desired.
Automatic controls use an aerial sensor to monitor outdoor conditions and activate your roof deicing system only when temperatures are cold enough and moisture is present. The system turns on when it is needed and shuts off automatically—you never have to think about it. This is the recommended approach for most installations because it prevents ice dams before they form and avoids running the system unnecessarily.
Manual controls give you direct on/off control of the system:
- The SCM-DUAL contactor switch includes a 24-hour programmable timer so you can schedule fixed operating windows during known storm hours.
- The SCW-120-15A WiFi switch lets you turn the system on or off remotely from a smartphone app, and also supports manual scheduling.
Automatic controls are strongly recommended for roofs and gutters in climates with frequent freeze-thaw cycles or unpredictable weather. Manual controls are a lower-cost option for small installations or properties where someone can monitor conditions closely.
- Overlapping WarmlyYours self-regulating cable is possible because self-regulating cable regulates heat output to prevent overheating and damaging the cable.
- Overlapping WarmlyYours constant wattage cable is not possible because it is on all the time and cannot come in contact with itself or any other constant wattage heating cable, as it will overheat and fail.
- Self-regulating cable requires the use of a control and/or a sensor to operate. WarmlyYours offers a variety of controls ranging from a basic manual control to our premium option that provides the ultimate in convenience and hands-off operation.
- Constant wattage cable does not require a thermostat/controller and can be connected to an outlet throughout an entire winter, during a single snow event, or whenever deicing is needed. An optional plug-in thermostat can be used if desired.
- Self-regulating cable is designed to be cut to length at the jobsite by an installer where it can then be end-capped with accessories (sold separately).
- Constant wattage cable cannot be shortened or altered in any way.
Operating costs are surprisingly low: Roof heating cables typically cost $40–$200 per winter season, depending on cable type, length, and local electricity rates.Cost breakdown by cable type:Self-Regulating Cables:
- Cost: $0.10–$0.30 per linear foot per day (adjusts heat output based on temperature)
- Efficiency: Uses less energy as temps rise
- Typical winter cost: $80–$200 per season
Constant Wattage Cables:
- Cost: $0.15–$0.40 per linear foot per day (fixed heat output)
- Efficiency: Runs at full power regardless of temperature
- Typical winter cost: $100–$250 per season
What affects operating cost:
- Cable length (more footage = higher cost)
- Local electricity rates (varies by region)
- Control type (smart controls optimize runtime and reduce costs)
- Winter severity (colder climates = more runtime)
Cost comparison: One ice dam repair ($5,000+) costs 25–125x more than an entire winter season of cable operation. Smart controls can reduce operating costs by 30–50% by running cables only when needed.
Turn on roof heating cables when temperatures drop to 32°F (0°C) or below and snow/ice is forecast. For optimal protection, use automatic controls that activate cables based on temperature and moisture conditions.Manual operation:
- Turn on: When temps reach 32°F and snow is expected
- Turn off: When temps rise above 40°F and all ice/snow has melted
- Monitor: Check daily during winter storms
Automatic operation (recommended):
- Thermostat control: Activates at preset temperature (typically 32–38°F)
- Moisture sensor: Detects snow/ice and activates automatically
- WiFi control: Remote monitoring and weather-based activation
Optimal operating temperatures:
- 10–34°F: Peak ice dam formation range (cables should run continuously)
- Below 10°F: Less ice dam risk (snow is drier), but cables should still run
- Above 34°F: Ice dams less likely, but cables can help clear remaining snow
Operating tips:
- Start early: Turn on cables before snow accumulates for best results
- Run during melting: Keep cables on until all snow/ice has melted and drained
- Extend runtime: Run cables for 2–4 hours after snow stops to ensure complete drainage
Energy-saving tip: Smart controls can reduce operating costs by 30–50% by running cables only when needed. Shop control options.
