A Recipe for Comfort in a Canadian Kitchen

The U-shaped kitchen is the central hub of this Richmond Hill home, but its stylish and durable stone tile flooring had a significant downside: it was ice-cold underfoot. This made mornings and evenings uncomfortable, causing the family to avoid the dining nook and rush through meal prep. The homeowner needed an efficient floor warming solution to cover the 90 sq. ft. of usable floor space within the larger 132 sq. ft. room.

To solve this, a WarmlyYours TempZone™ Flex Roll was selected. This in-floor heating solution is ideal for large, rectangular-shaped areas like this, as the heating cable comes pre-spaced on a mesh mat that can be quickly rolled out. The 1.5’ x 60’ roll was a perfect fit, simplifying the installation process over the wood subfloor before the new tile was laid.

The 120V system provides 1346 watts of heating power, enough to quickly and efficiently warm the dense stone flooring. The entire radiant floor heating system is controlled by an nSpire Touch WiFi Thermostat. This smart thermostat allows the homeowners to program a heating schedule around their lifestyle, ensuring the floor is warm when they wake up and saving energy when they're away. The result is a kitchen that is no longer just a workspace, but a truly comfortable and luxurious living area, adding significant value and appeal to the home.

Frequently Asked Questions

The operating cost for electric floor heating depends on your room size, hours of use, and local electricity rates. For this 90 sq. ft. heated kitchen in Ontario, Canada, it costs approximately $0.20 CAD per hour. Using a programmable thermostat like the nSpire Touch WiFi helps keep these costs low by only running the system when needed.
This project used tile, marble, or stone, which are ideal conductors for radiant floor heating. These materials heat up quickly and retain warmth very efficiently. Our TempZone™ systems are also approved for use under laminate, engineered wood, and luxury vinyl flooring, making them a versatile choice for any room.
Yes. Radiant floor heating is a very energy-efficient heating method. Unlike forced-air systems that heat the air (which rises and escapes), radiant heating warms the objects and people in the room directly from the ground up. This provides a more consistent, comfortable warmth, often allowing you to lower your home's main thermostat by a few degrees, saving energy.
In many cases, yes. While this system was designed for floor warming and supplemental comfort, a properly specified electric radiant floor heating system can often serve as the primary and sole heat source for a single room, especially in a well-insulated space like a modern kitchen.
