Plan the installation before attaching cable
This overview helps you prepare a pipe heat-tape installation. Use the current manual supplied for your exact cable as the installation instructions. Layout, termination, thermostat placement, insulation, and electrical protection vary between systems.
Prepare the pipe and system design
- Identify pipe material and diameter, measure the run, and note valves and fittings.
- Confirm the cable is approved for the pipe, location, and lowest expected temperature.
- Select cable length, attachment accessories, insulation, and controls using the manufacturer’s tables.
- Have the electrical supply checked for voltage, circuit capacity, grounding, and required ground-fault protection.
Repair leaks and inspect the pipe before work begins. Do not install over sharp projections or damaged surfaces. If the pipe is already frozen, have the plumbing assessed; freeze-prevention cable is not a substitute for a safe thawing procedure.
Attach cable using the approved layout
Position the cable, thermostat, and sensors exactly as directed. Use the specified attachment materials. Do not puncture the cable with staples or screws, and do not assume a spiral layout is permitted.
A fixed-length plug-in cable cannot be cut, spliced, crossed, or overlapped. A cut-to-length self-regulating system needs the approved power connection and end seal. Hardwired electrical connections and any work required by local rules should be completed by a qualified electrician.
Insulate, test, and record
Use only the allowed insulation material and thickness, with weather protection where required. Perform the manual’s specified tests and record the installation details. Keep the product manual and circuit information available for future inspection and repairs.

Can I cut a kit that is too long?
No. Choose the correct fixed-length kit or an approved cut-to-length system.
