Of space heaters, Jordan. Firefighters say December, January, and February are typically busy months for house fire calls. But because the frigid temperatures have come earlier this year, they're already fighting fires caused by space heaters. "He got up to run some errands, and the next thing I knew, I heard him screaming and yelling, 'Call the fire department!' And I'm thinking, 'Fuck!' You wouldn't believe how fast that smoke came out of there."
The Decatur Fire Department says Kay's call is the first this winter season, but they're sure it won't be the last. "We don't recommend you use them at all, but we know people are going to use space heaters. So the big thing is you have to keep three feet away from the space heater and anything that can burn." Over in Effingham, a house was destroyed after fire officials say residents hardwired a toaster oven and a fan to create heat. A dangerous combination.
Statistics show about 30% of house fires in the winter are because of space heaters. And of those fires, 80% involve fatalities. "It's basically because you can have a live flame, and you get stuff too close to them. A furnace does its job; it's designed to heat the room and push the air out through the ductwork."
"And with a space heater, it's going to be radiant heat. So if you get too close and the thing gets too hot, you're going to catch something on fire." Firefighters say the safest way to heat your home is with your furnace. If you have to use a space heater, buy one that's been lab-tested, and don't leave it on when you leave the room. "It was really a good piece of equipment, but these are the kinds of things that can happen."
"They're just accidents. You just don't have any idea what's going to happen." The damage to both properties will cost thousands of dollars to repair. Firefighters say the cost savings of a space heater definitely don't outweigh the potential dangers.
