Today, we're going to discuss sensor placement when installing Environnn 2 panels. If you examine the Environnn 2 panel, you'll notice the raised areas where my fingers are positioned; this is where the actual heating wire is located, nestled between the aluminum open area. The objective is to position the sensor head midway between each heating wire. According to the installation manual, you can simply tape it to the top or underneath in the same location. However, we have discovered a more effective method that operates slightly more efficiently and yields better heating results.

To achieve optimal placement, you should locate the sensor approximately six inches into the mat. Once you've identified this location, ensure that the sensor head is positioned correctly. We recommend marking this spot with your finger for reference. Next, take a small section of the carpet pad out, roughly the size of a corner, and verify that this area is situated between one of the two runs of cable. At this point, you have two options: you can either place the sensor head directly into the hole you created or, if you're near the edge of the wall, you can insert the sensor and run the cable underneath the pad.

If you choose to run the cable under the pad, you can secure it in place with tape as it enters the hole. Additionally, using a piece of tape to hold the sensor in position will ensure that when you lay down the mat, it rests correctly in the middle of the designated area. Once everything is set, you can pull your carpet over that section, confident that you'll achieve an accurate temperature reading in that spot.

Yes, absolutely. A floor sensor is mandatory for all floor heating systems, especially under carpet.

What a Floor Sensor Does

  • Monitors actual floor temperature
  • Prevents overheating (keeps floor ≤ 85°F / 29°C)
  • Allows thermostat to regulate heating precisely
  • Protects both the heating system and your carpet

Why It's Critical for Carpet

Carpet can trap heat more than hard surfaces. A floor sensor ensures the system doesn't overheat, which could damage the carpet or the heating element. The thermostat uses the sensor to maintain safe, consistent temperatures.

How It Works

  1. Sensor detects floor temperature
  2. Thermostat receives signal
  3. System adjusts heating to maintain target temperature
  4. Heat never exceeds safe limits

Installation

The floor sensor is placed under the carpet (typically near the center of the heated area) before the carpet is installed. It's a small, flexible probe that connects to the thermostat.

WarmlyYours Advantage

Every WarmlyYours floor heating product includes a backup floor sensor. This redundancy ensures your system continues to operate safely even if the primary sensor fails. It's one of the ways WarmlyYours goes above and beyond industry standards.

Thermostat Selection

Choose a thermostat designed for floor heating with carpet. WarmlyYours offers several options that work with Environ™ Foil Mat and include built-in GFCI protection for safety.

Professional Installation

A licensed electrician should install the thermostat and connect the floor sensor. This ensures proper operation and compliance with Canadian electrical codes.

Was this helpful? Yes No

WarmlyYours has recently begun including floor sensors with our heating elements to help ensure customers will have everything they need for optimal operation of their radiant heating systems.

The sensor included with your floor heating element can be installed with the heating system (the sensor is equally spaced between runs of the heating wire--see your install manual for more info). Installing this sensor with your floor heating control will enable energy efficient operation of the floor warming system based on the floor temperature instead of the ambient room temperature.

We generally recommend that you install a second, unconnected backup floor sensor alongside the primary one. In the very unlikely event that your first floor sensor is damaged, this install method will save you from having to pry up flooring to replace a floor sensor. You simply disconnect the damaged sensor from the thermostat and connect the backup sensor.

In addition to the floor sensor that was included with your heating element, our nSpiration Series thermostats also come with a floor sensor. If you purchase both a heating element and an nSpiration Series thermostat from WarmlyYours, you'll have a primary and a backup floor sensor for your system.
