Sizing infrared heating panels for a room

Use the room’s heating requirement and the exact panel ratings to select capacity.

For primary room heating, size the panels against a room heat-loss calculation at the project’s design conditions. Floor area alone does not account for insulation, glazing, air leakage, ceiling height or climate. A room name such as bathroom or basement is not enough to assign a dependable watts-per-square-foot value.

  1. Establish whether the panel is intended for local comfort or to heat the whole room.
  2. For whole-room heating, obtain the room’s design heat loss using the project’s heating calculation. ACCA Manual J is a residential load-calculation reference.
  3. Compare that load with the rated capacity of the exact panel model or planned group of panels. Use consistent units and the manufacturer’s product ratings.
  4. Check placement as well as capacity. Panels need the specified clearances and an unobstructed path into the occupied space; furniture can shield people from radiant heat.

The Ember manual allows supplementary or primary use, but does not guarantee a particular room temperature or warm-up time because building and environmental conditions vary. A fixed room-coverage table or a universal 25% allowance for every additional two feet of ceiling height should not replace the project calculation.
