This project transformed a massive, cold 1,815 sq. ft. basement in Lake Harmony, PA, into a warm, usable, and inviting living area. The primary challenge was heating such a large, below-grade space efficiently, especially under the chosen floating laminate flooring. WarmlyYours’s Environ Flex Roll provided the perfect in-floor heating solution, delivering consistent, deep warmth and adding significant comfort and value to the home.

A Solution for a Large-Scale Challenge

The goal for this expansive 1,815 sq. ft. lower level was a total transformation. Like many basements, it suffered from a persistent, ambient cold, making the concrete slab an uncomfortable surface. The client selected durable click-together laminate for the new floor, a practical choice that can, unfortunately, feel cold underfoot without a floor warming system.

The installer, JP Houster Choice LLC, needed a reliable and easy-to-install system. The Environ Flex Roll was specified as the perfect match. Its foil-based design is engineered specifically for floating floors like laminate, and its dry installation method requires no mortars or self-leveling, which saved significant time and complexity on a project of this scale.

Even though this was the installer's first time using the product, the simplicity of the roll-out system ensured a smooth process. To effectively manage the 1,620 sq. ft. of heated space, the layout was divided into two distinct zones (870 sq. ft. and 750 sq. ft.). Each zone is controlled by its own nJoy WiFi programmable thermostat, allowing the homeowner to heat the large area efficiently. The result was a perfectly heated, comfortable basement, confirmed by the customer’s immediate feedback: "We really love your product."

Featured Products

  • Environ™ Flex Roll: Our premier electric floor heating mat for floating floors. The foil-based system provides even, gentle heat for laminate and engineered wood without any messy thinset or adhesives.
  • ThermalSheet Insulating Underlayment: This 6mm thick underlayment was installed over the concrete slab. It acts as a powerful thermal break, preventing heat loss into the concrete and directing nearly 100% of the warmth up into the flooring, significantly boosting the system's efficiency.
  • nJoy WiFi Thermostat (UWG5-4999-WY): This programmable thermostat offers precise temperature control and can be accessed remotely via WiFi. Its floor sensor ensures the perfect temperature and safe operation.
  • nJoin 2.0 Power Module (USG5-4000): For large projects like this one, power modules are used to safely and effectively expand the electrical load that a single thermostat can control, allowing for seamless operation across a vast area.

* At full power, this entire 1,620 sq. ft. system costs approximately $3.42 per hour to run. This cost is effectively managed in two ways: Programmable Thermostats: The nJoy WiFi thermostats ensure the system only runs when needed, preventing wasted energy. Zoning: By splitting the area into two zones, the homeowner can choose to heat only the occupied sections of the basement. This calculation is based on the average Pennsylvania residential electricity rate of approximately $0.175 per kWh.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost varies based on your local electricity rates, the size of the room, and how you use it. This 1,620 sq. ft. project costs about $3.42 per hour at full power. However, with insulation, zoning, and a programmable thermostat, the system rarely needs to run at 100%, making it a very efficient way to heat the space.
Yes, in many cases, radiant floor heating is powerful enough to be the primary or sole heat source, especially in a well-insulated space. It provides a more comfortable, even heat than forced-air systems, which can leave cold spots. A professional heat loss calculation can confirm if it's sufficient for your specific needs.
The Environ Flex Roll is specifically designed for floating floors. It is an ideal solution for click-together laminate (as used in this project), engineered wood, and floating luxury vinyl plank (LVP) floors.
Yes. Radiant heat is very efficient because it heats objects and people in the room directly, rather than just heating the air (which can be lost). When paired with an insulating underlayment like ThermalSheet, the system becomes even more efficient by preventing heat from escaping downwards.
