Radiant Luxury for a Mid-Century Masterpiece in Altadena, CA

Master Bedroom Renovation | Solution: TempZone™ Flex Rolls

ALTADENA, CA
Floor Heating for whole home main room with fireplace and terrazzo ALTADENA, CA
Size: 283 sq. ft. Voltage: 240V Wattage: 3464 W Amps: 14 A Flooring: Engineered Wood (Glued) Cost/hr *: $1.18

Mid-century modern homes are celebrated for their clean lines and expansive glass, but they are often notorious for being chilly—especially in the foothills of Altadena. For this master bedroom renovation by ACS Design Build Group, the goal was to preserve the home's architectural integrity while introducing modern comfort. By installing a powerful WarmlyYours radiant heating system under new engineered wood floors, the homeowners created a sanctuary that is as cozy as it is stylish.

Invisible Comfort for a Large Suite

The Challenge Mid-century homes in Southern California often feature slab-on-grade foundations or terrazzo elements that, while beautiful, remain stubbornly cold to the touch. This expansive 283-square-foot master suite needed a heating solution that could handle the heat loss typical of older architecture without disrupting the clean visual lines of the room.

The Solution To cover the large floor area efficiently, the installers utilized TempZone™ Flex Rolls. The 240V system was chosen for its ability to handle larger square footage on a single circuit compared to 120V systems. The "cut-and-turn" roll design allowed the installers to easily navigate the room's layout, ensuring 231 square feet of total heating coverage.

The Outcome Installed directly under the glued engineered wood flooring, the system provides "primary heating" capabilities. The floor now radiates gentle, even warmth upwards, eliminating cold spots and allowing the homeowners to lower their central HVAC usage. The addition of the nSpire Touch WiFi Thermostat gives them total control, ensuring the floor is warm only when they need it, such as chilly mornings or late evenings.

Featured Products

1. TempZone™ Flex Roll (240V) Designed for larger rooms, the 240V Flex Roll minimizes the amperage draw on your electrical panel while providing robust heat (15 watts per sq. ft.). The flexible mesh allows installers to cut and turn the roll to fit any room shape.

  • Used in this project: 3' x 70' Roll and 1.5' x 14' Roll.

2. nSpire Touch WiFi Thermostat A sleek, modern controller that puts comfort in the palm of your hand. It features a 3.5” color touchscreen and remote control via smartphone app, perfect for pre-heating the bedroom before you head home.

* California has some of the highest electricity rates in the country. The costs below reflect the current estimated average for Southern California (~$0.34/kWh). This is a high-power system (3,464 Watts) designed to heat a large master suite. Hourly Cost: ~$1.18 per hour (while actively heating). Daily Cost: ~$4.72 per day (based on a 4-hour active heating cycle).

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. In this project, the system outputs approximately 15 watts per square foot, which is generally sufficient to act as the primary heat source for a bedroom, even in homes with higher heat loss like mid-century builds.
Absolutely. Engineered wood is one of the best flooring choices for radiant heat because its layered construction resists expanding and contracting with temperature changes. We always recommend checking with the flooring manufacturer for specific temperature limits (usually max 85°F).
For large rooms like this (over 200 sq. ft.), a 240V system is preferred. It allows you to heat twice the square footage on a single circuit breaker compared to 120V, simplifying the electrical installation.
In high-cost energy areas like California, a WiFi programmable thermostat is essential. It prevents the system from running 24/7. By programming a schedule (e.g., heat only from 6 AM–9 AM and 8 PM–11 PM), you significantly reduce operating costs.
