Creating a Master Spa Bathroom Experience

The goal for this master suite project, managed by the Borchert Building Company, was to create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere where the homeowners could truly unwind. A critical element of achieving this luxury feel was eliminating the shock of stepping onto a cold tile, marble, or stone floor—a discomfort common to bathrooms in the cold Michigan climate.

To solve this challenge, the team selected a WarmlyYours TempZone™ Flex Roll for the in-floor heating system. The Flex Roll's "cut-and-turn" design made installation quick and easy for the 72 square feet of heating coverage. The flexible mat was rolled out according to the custom SmartPlan, cut to turn at the ends of runs (without cutting the heating cable), and secured to the subfloor. Once the mat was set and tested with the provided Circuit Check, a thin-set mortar or self-leveling cement was applied before the final tile surface. This application method ensures maximum thermal transfer, turning the beautiful, but chilly, stone surface into a source of gentle, ambient radiant floor heating. The result is a high-efficiency comfort upgrade that truly completes the master spa experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Based on the specific project details (1080 Watts) and the local Washington, Michigan electricity rate of $0.21, this electric radiant floor heating system costs approximately $0.23 per hour to run. Running the floor warming system for 4 hours a day would result in a monthly cost of around $27.22, making it an affordable luxury for daily comfort.
While electric in-floor heating can often be the sole source of heat in a well-insulated room, this is typically considered supplemental floor warming in larger master bathrooms. For this 96 sq. ft. room, the primary function is to eliminate cold floors and provide targeted comfort, complementing the home's main HVAC system.
The TempZone™ Flex Roll is an ideal electric floor heating solution for use under thermally conductive materials like the Tile, Marble, or Stone used in this Washington, MI project. These materials are excellent at absorbing and evenly radiating the heat, maximizing the comfort and efficiency of the radiant floor heating system
Yes. Electric radiant floor heating is highly energy efficient because it uses line-of-sight heat (radiant heat) to warm occupants and surfaces directly, rather than heating the air. Paired with a programmable thermostat like the SmartStat, the system can be scheduled to run only when the room is in use, eliminating wasted energy and minimizing operating costs.
